NSRI Yzerfontein – Sea Rescue is the charity that saves lives on South African waters
Yzerfontein NSRI is based in the harbour. NSRI Rescue Stations are disciplined, along with the exhilaration of going to sea on a high speed rescue boat and the excitement of a rescue operation, goes the regular routine of station, craft and mobile maintenance and cleaning, of exercises and drills, and the many hours that have to be put into attending courses, receiving instruction, and studying.
At the moment we are 15 volunteers at our base, 9 operational seagoing crew ; among them 2 trained Coxswains and 1 trainee Coxswain, and 6 Shore crew. Most are Class III First Aid Responders and licenced as VHF Radio Operators. All are trained in navigation and chartwork and completed a Firefighting course at Koeberg. As we are all volunteers with our own day jobs, the base is not open 24/7, only when there is a call-out or training, although we are always on standby, just a phone call away – 082 990 5974.
